Life More Abundantly
“Be strong and courageous…for the Lord your
God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Deuteronomy 31:6
Have you had your birthday yet this year?
Are those numbers creeping up on you? Hey, that’s all they are. Just
numbers. Do you know that growing older is unavoidable but growing ‘old’ is
a choice? I want to encourage you to take a good look at what’s left of
your life and decide to make it count! Start living! General Douglas
MacArthur said, “Whatever your years, there is in every heart the love of
wonder, the undaunted challenge of events, the unfailing child-like appetite
for what comes next. You are as young as your hope, and as old as your
despair.”
It’s frightening to take risks, and try new
things. We think, “What if I fail?” What if you do? It won’t be your
first mistake, and no matter how bad it is, it probably won’t be your
worst. And unless you fail at something really big, like attempting to
climb Mt. Everest, or swimming the English Channel, it probably won’t be
your last mistake either. The one thing you can count on is, whichever way
it goes, you’ll gain in wisdom, experience and character. In other words,
you’ll become a better person for just having tried.
Refuse to listen to those who’ve settled for
second best and want you to do the same, too. Your goal is not to live long
– it’s to live now! At 100, Abraham became a father, at 90 Caleb
claimed a mountain, and at 70 Paul went to preach in Rome. A member of our
church is ninety-three years old. He works out in the gym weekly,
volunteers at Habitat for Humanity, and plays golf regularly. ( I know, -
some of you are tired just hearing about that.)
Jesus said, “I have come that they might have
life and have it more abundantly.”
Go ahead! Do whatever God puts into your
heart. What good is your life anyway, if you don’t live it?
